Offline advertising is key, especially if you are targeting a local market like I am. I am doing direct mailers, brochures, vinyl car wraps, and billboards to promote my site. So far it is working well attracting new traffic and I haven’t even pursued any internet advertising like SEO, SEM, Adwords, etc.

Offer plenty. What is Amazon? Now, besides being “Earth’s Biggest Bookstore,” it seems to be earth’s biggest store. When you too have a big inventory it tells your customers that you are here to stay and that they will be able to find what they want if they go to you first.

This is a headache waiting to happen. Everything you carry comes from someplace and there will always be snags getting it sometime.
1. If you have one supplier and they are fast and reliable they are gold, but they too can have problems from their suppliers. Suppose they have a major change; fire, flood death etc., where is your backup? Multiple suppliers? Get to know how they ship!
2. How much inventory will you need to carry? Better go slowly and find out what demand is. You can have too much money tied up in slow sellers.

Your best bet is a niche market. Find a niche and be great at filling it. I sold over a million dollars of merchandise at very good markup doing this.
