Great depiction of how you can arrange your sites for specific purposes. From what I have experienced, most websites providers should send this to all of their clients from the get go!

I built and manage the database for this site, and made all the html pages using MS Front Page. I paid a web designer for the .asp work (searching). It has been up since about 2000. The monthly income peaked at about $1,200 a few years ago, before Google referrals and adsense pulled out (only about $100 per month from Google ads). I am assuming referrals/Adsense pulled out because I was not refreshing the pages. Half my visits came from google. It’s time to make some major additions to the database, but I don’t want to put in the hundreds of hours to update unless I can see a better revenue stream. Obviously there is no advertising, only subscription income, which I plan to boost to $60/year. It takes so much time to chase advertisers. If I try to charge the growers to list, then I loose control of my content/database. What to do ???

This is all well and good – but what about sites like Twitter/Facebook – Twitter has no monetising system in place – so when the owners set it up – what did their business plan say? What it case of millions of users/Audience/potentials – Or did they have a strategic model? if so what was it?

This is a nice summary of the different business models. I would love to learn about other, less obvious ones such as sites that collect your information and then sell it, sites that offer some free services but gradually lure you into paying for services etc.

Anyone else know about any more of these kinds of business models?
