Some of you might remember the post I wrote a few days ago about how our car was broken into and all our things stolen.
While we haven’t exactly caught him, I have been able to exact my own brand of revenge.
Let me tell you about a little program called LogMeIn.
LogMeIn is a program that allows you to log into your computer from anywhere. This is handy when I’m away on business, needing to get into my office computer from home or when I need to figure out why “it’s not working” on my mom’s computer. LogMeIn has several different versions of their service and for this particular laptop I used their free service. I would definitely check them out if you are looking for a helpdesk or personal solution to accessing your computer while out of town on business.
When my laptop was stolen, on a whim I checked to see if the person who stole it was silly enough not to reformat it before logging on. Apparently, he is not a very smart thief. After a few sessions of fighting for control of the laptop with him (yes more than once) I was finally able, via LogMeIn, to delete all of my personal information, files, passwords, personal pictures and video’s off the computer. And created a much stronger password to lock him out of my computer. While this is not as great as getting all the stuff back, I at least have his IP number and other vital information to give to the police in hopes of tracking him down.
What an invaluable service! To me, this immediately made me a lifetime customer of LogMeIn.com. I will evangelize this product to my friends and family. While I wish the customer service had been a bit more helpful, I couldn’t be happier with the end result.
And now you know the rest of the story.
